The aim of poetic language is to bring
The echoes
Of None Speech
Into consciousness,
To preserve as a neural and corporeal aura,
A nimbus,
________The pre-para-linguistic.
Outside the orangey and its orangutan is
A dim silver shivering moss-segmented
Bright, bizarre light,
A phosphorescence that twists into the
Luminous fan-spread fins of a leaping fish.
Even the mosses lose
Their demarcations, their edged, their separations,
Become silver in silver
Inside
My disappeared self

immersion/oneness with surrounding reality: ‘I seek another language,/a language of non-dual
perception, a language/that fuses the binary opposite into a new voice,/A language that abolishes the
separation/Of subject and object, of the ordinary and the mystic.’ (Non-Dual Perception, p.233).

butterfly,/But we are not sure,/The Butterfly might have become/Zhuang Zi./If one cannot become a
butterfly,/One will never be a poet./Otherwise, those who think/Their trash is poetry are self-deluded.’ (p.
33)

Duane Locke has a Ph.D. in English Renaissance literature, is a Professor Emeritus of the Humanities, and
was Poet in Residence at the University of Tampa for over 20 years. His honors include The Edna St.
Vincent Millay Prize, The Charles Agnoff Award, and The Poetry Society of America’s Walt Whitman
Award. To date, he has published more than 6,000 poems in print and electronic magazines as well as 17
books of poetry.
